Textured Winter Tank Top

Inspiration
for the pattern … Menopause!
Now, if
you'll excuse me, I simply must stick my head in the freezer. - Samantha Jones,

If you are a
woman of a certain age, then you know the benefit of layering, or more
importantly un-layering for those power-surge moments, aka hot flashes. I call
this the 'Winter' Tank Top because it's ideal for wearing under a cardigan or
sweater on those cold Fall, Winter or even Spring days, and in the event you
experience a private Summer, you can un-layer down to the tank for relief!
This tank
works well with Worsted (weight 4) acrylic yarn for fall and winter, DK (weight
3) acrylic or Worsted cotton yarn for spring and summer so that you can have a
tank for every season. Whatever yarn you use, make sure you use the suggested hook
size that works best.
The
pattern is written with customisation in mind, so I encourage you to experiment
with different yarns and create a tank that works best for you. You can use the
sizing guide below or simply take an average of your chest, waist and hip
measurements and make your starting chain to that length.
For
the size medium (US 8 / UK 12) I used about 400 yards of weight 4
(worsted/aran) acrylic yarn.
If
you have not done so already, please join my Facebook Group and share pics of
your Textured Tank Top there.
Materials:
5.50mm & 4.00mm Hook
Tape Measure
Stitch Markers
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Sizes:
Small - 33" [82cm]
Medium - 36" [89cm]
Large - 40" [100cm]
X-large - 44" [110cm]

Measurements
needed if you’re making this for someone else:
- Average of chest, waist, and hips for starting chain.
- Hips up to just below the breast for the body of the tank.
- Just under to breast to armpit for breast coverage (this is where the ‘V’ of the tank will sit).
Gauge: Not important as
you will be basing your Winter Tank on your desired measurements.

Pattern:
Notes:
This pattern is written for a size medium. For all sizes
your starting CH needs to be divisible by 4.
Your ST counts should equal your starting CH count for each row/round until you’re at ‘V Neck’ in the pattern.
Make a CH that
measures 36” [89cm] – You want to stretch your CH to reach your desired
measurement.
Run your thumb
along the chain to make sure it’s not twisting and then join with a SL ST into
the first CH to form a circle, CH 2.
Round 1: DC [TR] BBO in the CH 2 SP and in each ST
around, SL ST into the 1st ST of the round, CH 2.
Round 2: Alternate
FP/BP DC [TR] in the CH 2 SP and in each ST around, SL ST into the 1st
ST of the round, CH 2.
Round 3: Repeat
Round 2.
Notes:
Try
it on to make
sure it fits over the hips.
From here on we will be turning our work and working in rows.
Row 1: CH 1, HDC
[HTR] in the CH 1 SP and in each remaining ST, SL ST into the 1st ST
of the round, CH 2, turn.
Row 2: DC [TR] 3LO
in the next ST and in each remaining ST, SL ST into the 1st ST of
the round, CH 2, turn.
Row 3: DC [TR] in
the next ST and in each remaining ST, SL ST into the 1st ST of the
round, CH 2, turn.
Row 4: HDC [HTR] in
the next ST and in each remaining ST, SL ST into the 1st ST of the
round, CH 2, turn.
Row 5: HDC [HTR] in
the next ST and in each remaining ST, SL ST into the 1st ST of the
round, CH 2, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-5
until the tank is just under the breasts or you have reached your desired
measurement.
CH 2 and turn after
your last repeat row.
Next Row: DC [TR]
3LO in the next SP and in each remaining ST, SL ST into the 1st ST
of the round, CH 2, turn.
Next Row: DC [TR]
in the next SP and in each remaining ST, SL ST into the 1st ST of
the round, CH 2, turn.
Repeat previous row
until breasts are covered and the tank is your desired length.
Note: Be sure to
turn after each round.
V Neck:
Divide the number
of starting chains by 4. Use this number for the next step.
You should
have turned after your last round. From where you hook is now, count the
correct number of STs to the left and place a ST marker.
Continuing from
where your hook is, CH 2, starting in the next ST, DC2TOG [TR2TOG], DC in each
of the remaining STs until you reach the 2nd ST from the ST marker, DC2TOG
[TR2TOG], CH 2, turn.
Next Row: DC2TOG
[TR2TOG], in each of the remaining STs until the last two STs, DC2TOG [TR2TOG],
CH 2, turn.
Repeat previous row
until 3 STs remain, CH 1, turn.
1st
Strap:
Next Row: HDC
[HTR] in each ST, CH 1, turn.
Repeat
previous row until the strap is long enough to go over your shoulder and be
attached to the back of the top later, tie off.
For the
other side of the V neck:
Attach
the yarn to the ST directly to the left of the ST marker (this is next to the
first half of the V neck).
Count
the correct number of ST to the left and place a ST marker into that ST.
Continuing from
where you re-joined the yarn, CH 2, starting in the next ST, DC2TOG [TR2TOG],
DC [TR]in each of the remaining STs until you reach the 2nd ST from the ST
marker, DC2TOG [TR2TOG], CH 2, turn.
Next Row: DC2TOG
[TR2TOG], DC [TR] in each of the remaining STs until the last two STs, DC2TOG
[TR2TOG], CH 2, turn.
Repeat previous row until 3 STs remain, CH 1, turn.
2nd
Strap:
Next Row:
HDC [HTR] in each ST, CH 1, turn.
Repeat this
row until the strap is the same length as the other strap. DO NOT FASTEN OFF,
DO NOT TURN.
Change to
4mm hook.
Border:
From
where you are now, CH 1, HDC down the long edge of the strap, across the back
and around the entire top of the tank until you are back at the 1st HDC of this
round. Join with a SL ST into the 1st HDC, tie off.
Finishing:
Using a yarn
needle, attach the traps to the back of the tank.
Tie off.
Weave ends.
Congratulations
… you are done!
